Boise - Small Town / Big City
Boise is a unique city set in the high desert of Idaho.
It is a beautiful and friendly city full of art, culture and good food.

Fall Colors & Sounds
A visit to Ann Morrison Park in Boise, Idaho, part of the green belt that runs through the city along the Boise River.
The temperature in Boise can change rapidly. In the park at time of filming, it was 28°F (-2°C) but it would rise into the 60s in the afternoon. Perhaps this contributes to the beauty of the place and the vibrant autumn colours.
Filmed in Ann Morrison Park, Boise, Idaho, October 2017.

Driving through Virgin River Gorge, Arizona, October 2017
On a two day road trip from Southern California to Idaho, via Las Vegas and Salt Lake City, myself and Alex, my wife, crossed through the north west of Arizona.
The creek came as a great surpise: from a distance, the highway appears to vanish into the mountains.
I therefore only had my mobile phone (a Samsung Galaxy S5) to shoot with and had to hold it as steady as possible. The film is jerky in places because of this, even after some stabilisation.

Dragonfly
I was lucky enough, recently, to spend some time visiting family in beautiful, rural Portugal.
While I was there, I took the chance to practice some decent close-up, short depth of field shots. I decided to turn some of these into this short nature film.

Over To You - BBC Radio Manchester
I was lucky enough to take part in BBC Radio Manchester Over To You project where 100 people from the region took on various roles in the station over one week in March.
The team liked the idea I pitched so I made a report talking to students who have come to Manchester from overseas to ask them what they think of the city.
On the day, I was mentored by BBC Journalist of the Year, Richard Stead. The report was recorded at the Fielden campus of The Manchester College. We then took it back to Salford Quays where I edited it. We then wrote a cue for the presenter to introduce the piece.
A few weeks later, many of the people who took part in the project were interviewed on a live show.
The recording includes the original broadcast report (including cue), as well as the interview that followed a few weeks later.
It was an incredible and rewarding experience and hopefully not the last. I can, however, now include BBC Radio Reporter on my CV!

Manchester Thunderstorm, 10th September 2017
After a sunny late afternoon, Manchester was suddenly struck by a thunderstorm.
After the first flash of lightning, I quickly set up the camera and filmed the storm from my livingroom, in slow motion.
Shot at 96fps
One section slowed down to 10% of that to show the detailed progression of the lightning fork.

5x5: Fall - Boise, Idaho, 2017
Five pieces of film, five seconds long, capturing the atmosphere of Fall in Boise, Idaho.
One of the first videos I made at college was 5x5: Autumn (see it at vimeo.com/moonandbacon). It was a good filming exercise and showed how important atmosphere is to a film.
On my latest trip to Boise, the fall colours were spectacular: deep rich colours in the leaves with a backdrop of beautiful, clear blue sky. I thought I should revisit the original idea.

Christmas Carol Service, Sacred Trinity Church
A little bit of the Christmas Carol Service on Sunday 18th December 2016 at Sacred Trinity Church, Chapel Street, Salford, a beautiful 500 year old chapel near Manchester City Centre.
I was there to film an interview with Rector Andy Salmon for another project (more on that soon). He asked for a couple of shots of the carol service, so I put this together.
"We meet on Sunday mornings at 11.15 am for a contemporary Anglican Communion. We are fairly traditional but friendly and relaxed with a twist of creativity. We always say that “All are Welcome” and we genuinely believe it. We are a mix of young and old, black and white, gay and straight, male and female, child and adult, well off and struggling to get by, noisy and quiet… Whoever you are there is room for you at Sacred Trinity. After the service we serve good coffee and have a chance to chat."
The church is also a rather lovely music venue.
Many thanks to everyone at Sacred Trinity for such a warm welcome.

Coming Over Here
Skip to 30 seconds for main film.
My final video assignment for the first year of FdA Broadcast Production at The Manchester College. A shortform documentary produced in the style of BBC Three, hence the bars and tone at the beginning and other parts usually included but not usually broadcast.
With much of the media portraying immigrants in such a negative light, I decided to show the real reasons why people come to the UK and the challenges they face.
Many thanks to Amaia, Sara and Jack for sharing their stories.

Just What Is So Great About Manchester?
A video for my college assignment.
We had a brief to create a 2 to 4 minute piece. I chose (from a list) to do my piece in the style of The One Show so it is light and easily digestible.
Lonely Planet recently named Manchester as one of the top 10 must see cities in the world, so I made that the subject of my piece, asking Mancunians and visitors what they think of the place and getting some expert opinion from cultural historian and ex Alberto C. P. Lee.
Links, actuality and vox pops filmed in Albert Square and around Manchester city centre.
Interview filmed in Fred's Ale House in Levenshulme.
Many thanks to C. P. Lee for talking to us cplee.co.uk
